Band Profile - Skelpaig!
Its about time we had some blurb on here about Skelpaig!
Skelpaig are David Adam, Kat Liley and Dave Sutherland, and they are playing Leith Folk Club at 8pm on Tues 3rd April. Not to be missed and at a bargain £5! Dave and Kat are, of course, familiar faces to the Fishermans session!
David Adam
Dave, is a superb small / border piper, whistle and flute player who produces a fair whack o'watts oot his pipes. Originally intending on the Scottish pipe competition and pipe band scene, he is now (thankfully) gigging and supplementing his income teaching, including with the Feisean movement. His popular whistle classes in Invergowrie are allegedly very worthwhile indeed and Dave also plays with the band MacUmba! His style is developing fast and a rapidly growing repetoire of Irish tunes and the more progressive tunes a la Mick McGoldrick are played with energetic, driving flair along with engaging harmonic arrangements that bring a real lift to the music.
Kat Liley
Kat is an enthusiastic energetic fiddler from Skye who has a BA in applied music, and her high achievements are readily apparent in her accurate, lilting, soulful Scottish fiddle style. This technique, which also appears to be notably influenced by a piping style, is combined with a superb wealth of Scottish tunes, others garnered from the depths of old tune collections, and an ever growing repetoire from across the tradition, especially Cape Breton. She teaches a very lucky bunch of kids in the Angus schools, who will, no doubt, bring much to enrich fiddle music on the East coast in the future. Within Skelpaig, her intuition for harmony is also pre-eminent in her deft adaption of the melody line!
Dave Sutherland
The final member of Skelpaig is their guitarist who aptly completes the trio. Perhaps its because he's also no mean fiddler that his comprehension of the music is engrained in him and is reflected in a varied, sometimes provocative musical accompaniment. Originating from near Fort Bill, His "laid back" snowboarding attitude does no harm to the feeling his music brings, especially in the more melancholy tunes, but which, when it needs it, can deliver the driving energy required! His musical skill is easy to admire, especially when he maintains it at 4am on Hogmanay!
Go and see them next week in Leith Folk Club, it will be well worth the visit!
Thanks Jamie, that's really kind!
Kat xx
