Paul bunks off in dallas to go to Charley's!
I have managed to make a get away during my business trip to Dallas this week. Usually I find after 72 hours trapped with shiny salesmen and marketing types I have to leave the room screaming for mercy.
My usual port of call in such situations is either a locals pub or a guitar shop. In Dallas it turned out to be a guitar shop. Not just any guitar shop. Charley’s guitar shop.
http://charleysguitar.com/index.phpCharleys has been around for more than 30 years and is now run by an absolute character called Brian. He’s been there done that and in spades. The shop he runs focuses really on the “good stuff” Factory churned out low end stuff is not here. That does not mean he has anything against it as everybody starts there. His place though looks higher up the food chain.
I spent quite the most delightful hour enjoying the caresses of this Collins cutaway:
Collins Cutaway! This is an outstanding piece of work. Better, Far better even than the Taliskar Guild guitar I enjoyed earlier in the year. Admittedly at >$3000 it is what you would expect:
“East Indian rosewood back and sides, select spruce top, grained ivoried binding”There is tone and sustain. I think it is would fair well against the early Bill Kelday guitar I played last year too. Which is great praise indeed.
I received a text from my wife half way through which basically said : “ Don’t you Dare!!”
So with this said all I could do was shoot the breeze with Brian. He is a golf fanatic in addition to being a guitar genius. Its funny how two guys can be peas in a pod. I am sure if Mike from Vintage strings went fishing with Brian a great many episodes would take place. Stories to frighten your grandchildren ……
I had a whale of a time. If you are in Dallas put this on the list of places to see…

Ok Paul, I am somewhat suspicious that the guitar you were caressing is now sold! You didn't get drunk did you?
:-)
