The Home of the Fisherman's Session

Welcome to the home of the Fishermans celtic music session. This site is for musicians, visitors, strangers and friends to find out where and when the music is, who's likely to be there, and what its all about. This web resource also seeks to encourage celtic folk music in Tayside and beyond. Explore the gig guide, discussion forums and music gallery. Enjoy!

The Lang Spoon Festival

Last weekend was the second Festival based in and around the Rothes Halls in, where else but, Glenrothes. Unfortunately, I was only able to take in the Sunday lunchtime singaround and the concert which followed.

The singaround was compered by that wonderful wordsmith Adam McNaughtan, ably assisted by Fiona Forbes. Acts included a new young Kirkcaldy band called "Stonedyke" singing all their own songs which included one about "golden oldie" folkies and songs with 3 Chords! A local moothie player had the audience reeling with his masterey of tunes played on two moothies and weekend guests Mike and Ali Vass played a stormin' set of tunes to warm us up before the concert.

The concert was headlined by Archie Fisher, well supported by Wendy Weatherby, and a superb young pianist called James Ross. Back o' the Moon provided the power and pace with fast and furious reels, delicate songs and even Scottish Stepdancing!

A wonderful way to spend over 5 hours on a Sunday afternoon but the highlight for me was having a craic with the legendary John Watt, the "faither" of the Kelty Clippie. We were discussing the afternoon's entertainment and he said he really enjoyed the fiddle of Mike Vass and the piano accompaniment from sister Ali was something else. However he finished with a comment about Ali Vass' singing and said "she should jist stick tae the piano".

Just as well he does not come to the Fish!!
