Young Traditional Musician '07
Sunday 28th January 2007
Its that time of year when the best of the young traditional musicians go for the top spot and with it a record deal! The semi-final happened way back in October, and the final, next week, occurs within the festivities of Celtic Connections. This award goes from strength to strength, with the past 7 overall winners going on to pursue succesful traditional music careers.
A full list of semi-finalists can be seen here.
You might note that a friendly face is amongst the finalists in the form of Monifieth man, Calum McCrimmon! Here's wishing you the best from the musicians at the fish! For those of you who don't know, Calum has completed the traditional music course at the RSAMD in Glasgow and is now, gigging, tutoring in the Scottish Feisean movement, and helping in the production of the National Youth Pipe Band. All power to him!
Mike Vass is also making another bid for the top spot, having been a runner up last year. He is a great fiddle player, with a lilting bow hand, and superb legato style. I saw him last at, of all things, a Dundee University Rucksack Ceilidh at the Friary, wherein, such was the infectious atmosphere from Mike's playing, the dancing was the best I've seen at any ceilidh (except of course the wedding I was groom at), there were frollicking women flying horizontally out of baskets and puddles of sweat accumlating. What more could a man want?!!!!.....
Apart from anything, the final should be a great listen, so try and get tickets if you can!
